Synopsis

Changes in the Finnish worldview landscape have created the need to develop religious and worldview education. Teachers have often pioneered integrative teaching of worldview education subjects identifying overlapping content in religious education and worldview studies. In the development work, it is essential to consider the different didactic backgrounds of the subjects and the interfaces between professionalism and personality that are part of the teacher professionalism. This study focuses on the development work for partially integrative worldview education in the University of Helsinki training schools, investigating teachers’ professional approaches in the curriculum process. According to the results, the teachers used different roles and perspectives in the process, emphasizing often the personal elements of the profession. This study shows that it is necessary to pay attention to the multiple interpretations of the teacher’s profession in the future when developing integrative worldview education.
