Synopsis

The topic of the study is music practice in the context of basic education. The article addresses the process of learning to play an instrument, which is based on a learning material called the ”soittopassi” (“playing pass”). The study focuses on students’ experiences of working from the perspective of meaning and skill development. The data collected during the 2023-2024 school year consists of surveys (N=197) and interviews (N=10) conducted with students in grades 3-7. The results indicated that students valued the freedom of choice involved in different stages of the process, working together with peers, and receiving feedback on their work. Students also felt that their playing skills had developed during the process.
