Germanistik in Finnland und Fennistik in den DACH-Ländern: Gleiches und Ungleiches gestern und heute

German Studies in Finland and Finnish Studies in German-speaking countries are among the core disciplines of the FI-DACH network. This paper discusses their development into university subjects, their current status as well as their future perspectives. Common to both subjects is that they are firmly rooted in their disciplinary tradition, but have also enriched that tradition through their new university environment. Starting with an overview of the disciplinary genesis and institutionalization of the two subjects, their research and teaching contents will be discussed in more detail. In essence, the focus will be on the special features and substantive emphases of German and Finnish Studies Abroad, as well as on the role of teaching German or Finnish as a foreign language in the university setting. Based  on this, some reflections on the relationship between disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity are given,  using the examples of German studies in Finland and Finnish studies in German-speaking countries. Finally, it is discussed how these two small subjects can maintain their disciplinary autonomy in the multi- and interdisciplinary scientific community.
