Tämä Suomen Filosofisen Yhdistyksen 150-vuotisjuhlavuoden kunniaksi julkaistava teos sisältää uutta historiallista tutkimustietoa yhdistyksen ja siten suomalaisen filosofian vaiheista 1800-luvun lopulta nykyaikaan. Yhdistys näyttäytyy suomalaiseen ja kansainväliseen filosofiseen elämään vaikuttavana monipuolisena toimijana, joka on historiansa kuluessa joutunut kohtaamaan myös sotavuosien, koulukuntakiistojen ja tiedepoliittisten vaikutuspyrkimysten pai-neita. Teoksen kirjoittajat ovat suomalaisen filosofian historian asiantuntijoita.

This volume of the Acta Philosophica Fennica series collects articles based on papers delivered at the Philosophical Society of Finland Colloquium 2020 (FiPhi 2020). The diversity of the topics it covers - from environmental ethics to philosophy of physics, and from epistemic responsibility to theories of truth - reflects the diversity of philosophical research in Finland. The colloquium was held in Helsinki in January 2020.

The essays collected in this volume examine philosophical issues of normativity from a wide variety of perspectives: historical, logical, epistemic, ethical, and political. The volume contains articles based on papers delivered at the 2019 Entretiens of Institut International de Philosophie (I.I.P.) at the University of Helsinki, Finland. This annual meeting of I.I.P. was co-hosted by the University of Helsinki and the Philosophical Society of Finland.

ILKKA NIINILUOTO is Academician and Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Helsinki. He is, among other things, a former Rector and Chancellor of the University of Helsinki as well as a Past President of the Philosophical Society of Finland. He is a member of I.I.P. since 1988.

SAMI PIHLSTRÖM is Professor of Philosophy of Religion at the University of Helsinki and the President of the Philosophical Society of Finland, as well as the Chair of the Research Council for Culture and Society at the Academy of Finland. He is a member of I.I.P. since 2016.

This volume is dedicated to Sami Pihlström on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday. The articles it contains are inspired by his work on philosophical pragmatism and on issues in the philosophy of religion. Pihlström is Professor of Philosophy of Religion at the University of Helsinki and President of the
Philosophical Society of Finland.

HENRIK RYDENFELT is docent of practical philosophy and media and communication studies at the University of Helsinki.

HEIKKI J. KOSKINEN is docent of theoretical philosophy and university researcher at the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence Reason and Religious Recognition at the University of Helsinki.

MATS BERGMAN is associate professor of communication studies at the Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki.

Action, Value and Metaphysics

The articles in this collection are based on presentations given at the 2018 colloquium of the Philosophical Society of Finland, held in Helsinki on 11-12 January 2018. This colloquium represented, in certain ways, a break from a long tradition. While the annual colloquiums of the society have, in the past, been built around a “one word” theme (e.g., truth or virtue), and included talks given only in Finnish or in Swedish, this time the objective was an open, general, and rigorously refereed conference in which philosophers could disseminate and discuss their best work. It was also decided that the conference presentations could also be given in English, not only to attract contributors beyond our borders, but most of all to better reflect and serve the diversifying Finnish philosophy. This collection is a result of an open call for papers and presents a sample of current philosophical work in Finland, with topics ranging from collective responsibility to philosophy of action and from metaphysics to metaethics.

Tämä teos on jatkoa kolmelle aiemmalle samankaltaiselle kertomus- kokoelmalle, Miten meistä tuli historian tohtoreita? (toim. Päiviö Tommila, Suomen historiallinen seura, Helsinki 1998), Miten meistä tuli oikeustieteen tohtoreita? (toim. Heikki Halila ja Pekka Timonen, Suomalainen lakimiesyhdistys, Helsinki 2003) ja Miten minusta tuli kasvatuksen historian tohtori? (toim. Jouko Kauranne, Martti T. Kuikka, Erkki Merimaa ja Jukka Rantala, Suomen koulutushistoriallinen seura, Helsinki 2009).

Tarkoituksena on tallettaa väittelyperinnettä filosofian alalta sekä tulevan historiankirjoituksen avuksi että opiksi ja huviksi menneille ja tuleville väittelijöille. Tohtoriksi väitteleminen on useimmille tieteilijöille ikimuistoinen tapahtuma, johon liittyy paljon iloa, mutta myös vaikeuksia. Vaikka usein korostetaan, ettei väitös saa olla elämäntehtävä, se on pitkällekin edenneille tutkijoille silti yleensä ensimmäinen merkittävä tieteellinen saavutus, ja siksi hyvin tärkeä.
